to dVswitch or not? PDF Print E-mail

That, is the question....

So, I'm trying to decide what architecture is going to benefit us the most, and I've got it narrowed down to two different configurations.

  1. Total dVswitch envrironment
  2. Hybring sVswitch and dVswitch environment

Here are a couple illustrations highlighting what I'm thinking:

dVswitch only:

Hybrid:

If I were limited to two cables (10g or CNA), I think it would be a "no-brainer" and go with the dVswitch only environment. But because my organization requires cable separation for security reason. I'm thinking more towards the hybrid. If the vCenter server were to fail, there would be no way to manage the system :(

What are your thoughts?

To kind of get you started to think about November we are working on a couple of really cools things for you.  The first is our regular meeting which will be sponsored by Emulex.  We also have Jon Dybik scheduled to talk about virtualizing Microsoft SQL server.  So bring your questions around spindles, sizing, licensing etc… should be a great learning session.

The next day Rob Randell from VMware will be speaking at the ISSA meeting at Platform Labs at 8am.  Rob is out on Youtube with Cisco for a Next-Gen Data Center Security discussion.  I believe there is a cover fee for the door for the ISSA chapter meetings as soon as I find out I will let you know.  I want to thank Tom MacKay for getting the scheduled for us.

There are a ton of other guest speakers I am working on as well as the all day event, tentatively schedule for the May meeting.  Send feedback on classes, birds of a feather, vendors, discussions etc... that you would like to see and we will see what we can accommodate.

Just to let everyone know that follows the site you can follow me on Twitter so you know when I publish something.  I am “virtuallywarped” it just turned out that way, honestly.  That way I can get notes out.  I will warn you I am not on Twitter all the time so to contact me e-mail is still the best method.

If you have any news or events you would like to share let me know so we can get the word out.

If you missed out on this month's VMUG you missed the presentation by Reflex Systems. Don't worry though we are working on getting their presentation posted soon. In the mean time if you are interested download their appliance and documentation at http://www2.reflexsystems.com/l/19/oads-VMC-reflex-vmc-server-zip/ENGYJ also check out their site for webinars, white papers and case studies. We will get their PowerPoint posted under the shared documents section soon.

Tom MacKay did a great job (as usual) presenting a video he did as well as an overview of VMworld 2009. Additionally he covered announcements made this year like VMware GO the Vmware Terramark investment and the Wyse Pocket Cloud unfortunately these presentations are to big for this site I will see if I can find someplace to store these larger files for future presentations. This included a movie Tom created (also too large, sorry). Check out some of the VMworld 2009 videos.

Don't forget to provide some feedback on the study groups, special interest groups groups PowerShell or other topics you want to get some more info on so we can arrange it. We are always looking for ways to improve and get you the topics you want. As well we are always looking for you presentations, questions and feedback. Check back often because we will updates regularly and are opening the calendar and a vendor forum section so we can get out additional vendor activities.

At VMworld this year I was able to tour the VMware campus at part of the VMUG leadership, it was cool to check out the campus and see how they focus on being green not only by utilizing their products but at the campus level. They utilize a product call Tater ware instead of the regular plastic in the cafeteria which is all composted instead of going into the trash. The cafeteria floors are made from recycled bottles and other areas in the building have wood floors recovered from Thomas Edison's barn. The entire facility was built with green and sustainable. Even saw electric cars and a blue Prius with the VMware logo's.
