All,
Over the past few VMWorlds, I have sent out an email outlining some of my personal picks for the sessions I think would be the best to attend based on my direct experience with the speaker, either through personal relationship, or presenting with them at another event. I have taken a look at all of the speaker names, and chosen only the ones I know are “golden” in technical knowledge or presentation skills! Try not to miss the ones marked “Highly Recommended” as they are sessions that have an extraordinary speaker or topic.
Since I was always attending past VMWorlds, it was somewhat easy to coordinate meetings and get you connected with Engineering folks as well as meeting up at the parties and events. Well, this is the first year in the last 5 years that I will not be attending with you (Since there are a finite number of employee passes, many newer SEs have not had the opportunity to attend, and the labs as self-paced this year), so I am creating this email as your “Virtual Tom” reference doc! :)
There will be several management folks on site to assist...My manager, Phil Petrella; and Greg Andsager, Craig’s Manager. I have already coordinated several meetings for some of you already, but can have Greg & Phil assist on site as well. Should anyone have any additional Engineering, PM, or other topics of interest that you would like me to assist in scheduling, please let me know as we still have opportunity to do so...
Remember, the standard disclaimer applies: These are my own picks and your mileage may vary! Feedback on my picks would be appreciated, and I know they will be better than my Fantasy Football picks this year!! :)
Let me know if you have questions or comments, and have a great time in San Francisco!
Thanks!
Tom

***Update*** The meeting invitation went out today! Many thanks to VMware for the quick turnaround, especially with VMworld only a few weeks away.
Some of you may be wondering why you have not received an email invitation for this month's meeting. Well, we were too... VMware apparently had some type of system outage, resulting in "lost invitations." At this point, it is unclear whether an email will be sent.

The audience of this site primarily consists of COVMUG members. But it is the hope of the COVMUG that we can continue to attract new members as well. In this spirit, there may be some reading this page who have yet to begin their virtualization journey, or perhaps may have just begun. There are some excellent resources out on the internet to help describe the early stages of a virtualization effort, as well as use-case scenarios and experiences.
One site describing the rise of the virtualization effort as well as planning involved comes from Gartener. See their below article:
Magic Quadrant for x86 Server Virtualization Infrastructure
The second is a blog written by a VMWare Staffer that describes various aspects of virtualization, as well as new developments in the virtualzation world:
Journey to the Cloud
So, for those of you in the Central Ohio Region seeking to begin your virtualization journey, or perhaps just starting start a checklist for your journey. Perhaps it should look something like the list included below.
1. Research exactly what virtualization is, what it means to your company, and why to virtualize
2. Review Professional articles, such as Magic Quadrant
3. Seek Case Information and real-life examples, such as Journey to the Cloud
4. Build a test lab
5. Reach out to local VMware enthusiasts, such as those of us here at the COVMUG.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to post those questions to the COVMUG forum.
Now, let's get virtual Central Ohio! |
