My "white-box"" ESX host

My "white-box"" ESX host

Out of need for the ability to work on PowerShell scripts while at home. I was trying to figure out a white-box ESX setup to stick in the basement so that I could simulate prospective environments that I'd like to test. I've managed to get ESX 4.0u1 and a vCenter server running under fusion but it KILLS my MPB :( soo....

In the basement I had my old gaming system... its has:

So since I've not played COD4 in like a year... I ripped the ESX 4.0u1 iso to DVD and ran down and popped it in. Figured the RAID-0 array that I had built would not work so well due to my "fake-raid" experiences with Linux; I broke the array and presented the drives as standard SATA disks...

low and behold, ESX recognized the disks, NIC's and installed perfectly without a hitch!

my lab is up and cooking as we speak!

Did you know that there was a CONUG?  What is that Central Ohio NetApp Users group.  I attended my first last night, good time and they have appetizers (in case you were interested in what they have that we don't.  If you are interested ask the NetApp guys about it next month when they are in to sponsor our meeting and check out http://communities.netapp.com/groups/cbus-coh-ug Also if there are other users groups meeting that talk about VMware let me know and we will get the word out for them as well.

On another note there was an interesting release from vKernel, take a look http://www.vkernel.com/solutions/capacity-view and check out their new product.  Best of all its free (we know how that goes over).

Cloud

No matter what your thought is on the “Cloud” you should at least be getting familiar with the terminology and technology behind it.  It has been gaining momentum and the technology seems to be catching up.  At least that is what I am reading.  Speaking of which if you don’t subscribe to “The Internet Protocol Journal” you might want to read the last couple of articles (Volume 12, Number 3 and Volume 12, Number 4 titled “Cloud Computing” by T. Sridhar.  You can read these at http://www.cisco.com/web/about/ac123/ac147/about_cisco_the_internet_protocol_journal.html .  The two part article is a little lengthy but well worth the read.  It pretty much covers the who, what and why of the cloud.  If you haven’t thought about this from the business stand point, think about the hardware replacement cycle that most companies go through.  Think of all the time spent evaluating vendors, testing and evaluating and then implementing new technology.  This doesn’t mean you will necessarily be out of a job or all of your equipment will go away.  By changing over to operating expenses versa capital expenses the business can save a lot of money especially when you have to replace a lot of hardware on the floor every couple of years.  Move to the cloud and some of those worries go away and become some other datacenter manager’s issues.  This may or may not be a fit for your needs but that is why you should investigate it further.
